Wonder Valley is a desert paradise with one of the most unique living environments in the Western United States. This Bureau of Land Management (BLM) limited use area offers off-roading, motorcycling, rock climbing. mining, rock hounding to camping, this high desert has something for everyone.
Wonder Valley is an unincorporated rural community located east of Twentynine Palms, California. Set in a desert valley between the Pinto and Bullion Mountains, Wonder Valley experiences cold winters and hot summers. One of the first things to strike a casual observer driving through Wonder Valley is the profusion of small cabins scattered widely across the valley floor.
In the 1930 and 1940, Wonder Valley was homesteaded. That means the government would give a 5 acre parcel of land to anyone who would build a small structure. It started by requests from primarily World War I Servicemen who wanted to move out in the desert for health and recreational purposes. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) created The Small Tract Act of 1938. The Small Tract Act was about the only method of making federal land available for private ownership. These homesteads were not meant to be working farms, but vacation homes for city dwellers.
San Bernardino County was enthusiastic about "getting lands on the tax rolls", and was not concerned about infrastructure (roads, water, power, schools) to support such development. Wonder Valleys CSA (County Service Area) dirt roads are not part of the county maintained road system so the property owners pay for maintenance. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) also released their long-awaited West Mojave Plan (WEMO) which increases the number of roads that can be used by off-road vehicles in Wonder Valley.
At the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center to the north, Marines conduct live-fire training and practice dropping bombs. The booms travel south, punching through Wonder Valley where the earth shudders in reply :)
Wonder Valley is a unique place in this overcrowded world. It's a beautiful valley in an unincorporated rural desert area just east of Twentynine Palms where you will find shopping, a library, post office, restaurants etc. About 30 minutes away is Yucca Valley, with a lot more stores and restaurants. The city of Palm Springs is only an hour away.
Wonder Valley has a few Community ORV Watch (COW) Tree Huggers that believe driving any vehicle on Wonder Valley dirt roads threaten the desert tortoise. I have never seen a flat tortoise on a dirt road. Learn more about Wonder Valleys Tree Huggers in the news.
